Black Division Semifinals: Sacred Heart Stalls Farmingdale's Comeback Bid

by Justin Miller

In the second game of the Black Division semifinals, #2 Sacred Heart took on #3 Farmingdale. Sacred Heart got the early advantage when Jake Calanni found the back of the net with a wide open shot from the slot. They scored again two minutes after Calanni’s goal when a point shot from Alexander Giuliano beat Justin DeSaro. A power play opportunity allowed the Pioneers to keep pouring it on, courtesy of a Jack Kinahan goal.

A second period goal from Noah O’Neil, his second of the tournament, allowed Sacred Heart to keep their foot on the gas. Ian Ribarich provided Farmingdale’s first goal of the game shorthanded, but Sacred Heart almost immediately countered with a Barry Burke power play goal.

Despite the big-time deficit, the Rams started to mount a comeback. Peter Abazis got a goal with just a second left in the second period. Then, in the third period, James Jensen buried a power play goal to come within two. Brendan Dixson followed with his second goal of the tournament to make it a one-goal contest. With pressure mounting as Farmingdale tried to complete the comeback, Sacred Heart neutralized the opposition. Kinahan ripped in his second goal of the game to secure his team’s lead. Sacred Heart came up with a 6-4 win to punch their ticket to the finals. They’ll be facing off against Stony Brook for the Black Division championship.
